NYU in Second Place at Hershey Cup

NYU in Second Place at Hershey Cup

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's golf team completed day one of the Hershey Cup hosted by Rochester University on Sunday, April 2, at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, PA.

The Violets shot 302 to position themselves in second place on day one. Allegheny College currently holds the lead, shooting an even 300 on Sunday.

"All the guys were pretty consistent, but I think we can do better. I really do," said Head Coach Brad Johnson. "We were not-so-great on the front nine, but we played really well on the back side. Our guys regrouped on the back and put some good numbers there."

Freshman Jensen Li kicked off his play at the Hershey Cup by shooting a score of 72, one-over-par after starting the day with a triple bogey on the fifth hole. The Sunnyvale, CA, native hit five birdies and now currently sits atop the leaderboard tied with three other golfers.

"Jensen had a lot of birdies," said Johnson. "His four birdies on the backside were huge. That's what kept him in it. His putting was really on today. Seemed to make everything from 10 feet."

Sitting behind in a eight-way tie for 20th was senior captain Eric Tarakjian, shooting 76 on day one.

"Eric played very consistent all day," said Johnson. "He had some good shots on the green. He was solid all day."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Freshmen Kelly Sun and Matthew Shen tied for 27th with a score of 77.

- Sophomore Luke Oberholtzer shot a 78 to tie for 36th.

- Freshman Justin Chan played as NYU's individual and posted a score of 87 to fall into 83rd.

"If we can clean up some of these big numbers we can definitely have a chance of taking this tournament," said Johnson.
