Yellowjackets Battle Top Competition At Jekyll Island

The University of Rochester golf team is competing this weekend at one of the premier Division III golf tournaments in the country, the Jekyll Island Invitational at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.

After two rounds of play, UR sits in 27th place of 29 schools with a two day score of 634, with the Yellowjackets carding identical rounds of 317 in rounds one and two. Rochester's opening round from Friday was forced to be completed early on Saturday morning after a two-hour frost delay pushed things back in the opening round.

Emory University, winner of last week's UAA Match Play Championship, currently holds the 36-hole lead, with a 582 score, including an impressive 1-under round on Saturday.  Oglethorpe is 2nd (584) and is tied with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (584). First round leader Washington & Lee is fourth with a 586 score.

Overall, of the 29 schools in the field this weekend, 22 are included in the most recent Division III coaches poll, with 15 of those schools being in the top-25. The field includes the #1, #3, #5, #7, #9 and #10 teams in the nation.  Rochester is among others receiving votes in the poll. 

Freshman Jack Mulligan leads the Yellowjackets after two rounds with a score of 151.  His opening round was a 6-over 78 and Saturday's scorecard revealed a 1-over 73. He is tied for 53rd on the leaderboard.

Junior Jason Paek was Rochester's first round leader, carding a 4-over 76. In Saturday's round, he shot an 82 and is in a tie for 108th through 36 holes with a score of 158.

Senior Daniel Luftspring broke 80 in Saturday's 2nd round, shooting a 7-over 79. After his opening round 80, his score of 159 has him in a tie for 113th.

Rounding out the lineup is junior Corey Mitchener and senior Jona Scott. Mitchener has had rounds of 83 and 83 for a 166 score. Scott recorded an 88 and 84 for a two round total of 172.
