NYU Finishes 31st at NCAA Championship

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's golf team improved by nine strokes in its second round of competition at the NCAA Division III Championship, which is being held at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC, Tuesday-Friday, May 15-18.

After shooting 317 in Tuesday's first round, the Violets improved to 308 on Wednesday for a two-day total of 625. However, only the top 18 of the 42 participating teams make the cut for the final two rounds, so the Violets' season is officially over.

However, there were still many bright spots on Wednesday. Kelly Sun improved by eight strokes,  shooting 78 over the par-72, 6,780-yard West Course following a round of 86 on Tuesday.

Luke Oberholtzer shot a team-low 75 on Wednesday, an 18-stroke improvement from Tuesday (168, 93-75).

The top finisher for NYU over the two rounds was Matt Shen, who shot 153 (73-80) and tied for 86th place. Robbie Keyes, who carded 78's on both rounds, finished in a tie for 113th place.

Also competing for NYU and bettering his performance on round two was Patrick McNary (157, 80-77).

Overall 217 golfers took to the links.

"I'm happy that we improved during the second round and gave a better showing then we did on Tuesday," said Head Coach Brad Johnson. "I'm disappointed that we didn't make the cut, but we had a great season and I know the players will do everything they can to make sure we are back here again next year."
