Rochester Defense Excels in 3-2 Win Over #3 St. Lawrence

From University of Rochester Athletics

Rochester paired three strong first half goals with an outstanding defensive performance - especially in the second half - to upend third-ranked St. Lawrence University, 3-2, at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Friday night. Nick Pastore scored two goals and Jarvis D'Souza had one for the Yellowjackets.

Morgan Smith and Brouk Seyete scored for St. Lawrence  (2-1). The Saints, ranked #7 in the pre-season coaches' poll, rose to #2 after posting wins of 5-2 and 4-0 in their own tournament last weekend.

Rochester (2-1) has won two in a row since dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to SUNY Morrisville last week at UR's Flower City Classic. Rochester posted a 3-0 win over Buffalo State last Sunday and wound up winning the Classic on goal-difference. The Yellowjackets were ranked #13 in pre-season. The loss to Morrisville knocked Rochester out of the top 25 and into the Also Receiving Votes category.

D'Souza put Rochester ahead, 1-0, in the 14th minute. Jeff Fafinski put a corner kick on the near post and Alex Swanger (Penfield) headed it into the middle where D'Souza headed it into the left side of the net.

Smith equalized four minutes later. He got to a loose ball ahead of a Rochester fullback and drove it into the right corner of the net.

In the 25th minute, Andrew Greenway and Pastore came down the left sideline. Pastore cut just inside the box, evaded two defenders, and hit a low shot off goalkeeper Aaron Costello's hands that trickled into the net. The Yellowjackets thought they had a third goal almost immediately afterwards when Greenway lunged to head in a free kick from Shane Dobles but his timing was just off and the assistant referee's flag went up.

Six and a half minutes later, it was 2-2. Jonathan Mendoza charged down the middle and found Brouk running left to right about 20 yards from goal. He collected the ball, dribbled slightly, and right-footed a shot to the lower right hand corner as Rochester goalkeeper Michael Shatkin charged off the line.

The Yellowjackets went back up in the 33rd minute. D'Souza crossed the ball from right wing and Pastore volleyed it outside the left side of the box to the lower right hand corner.

Shatkin finished with three saves for Rochester on 12 SLU shots. The Yellowjackets had three shots – all at goal and all went in. Rochester's defense held up under enormous pressure in the second half, more as the game deepened. Andrew Sheridan was excellent on the back four, deflecting passes, and clearing balls from in front of goal before the Saints could get a good shot. With less than 19 minutes to play, SLU's Austin Roney got through and past the penalty spot but Sheridan was able to poke the ball away.

Christian Barral-Arteta fired a point-blank shot at Shatkin with 4:15 to play With just over a minute left, Brouk's bicycle kick from seven yards was blocked, bandied about, and cleared.
