Alex Swanger of Rochester Named NSCAA Scholar All-American

From University of Rochester Athletics

Rochester junior forward Alex Swanger had a year that most players can only dream about – on the field and in the classroom. He has earned the highest possible honors in each venue.

His latest accolade was his selection as a 2013 Scholar All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. This follows on the heels of his selection to the NSCAA's Scholar All-East Region team. He was one of six Rochester athletes to receive the Scholar All-Region honor.

In early December, he was named to the NSCAA's All-America Team. He was chosen First Team All-East Region by the NSCAA and advanced to the national ballot. At the end of the regular season, Swanger was selected as the Men's Soccer Player of the Year in the University Athletic Association and First Team All-UAA. Voting for those awards is conducted among the men's head coaches.

Rochester won the UAA title with a 5-1-1 won-lost-tied record. The Yellowjackets received the UAA's Pool A (automatic qualifier) bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Rochester won its first two NCAA matches, defeating SUNY Institute of Technology (SUNYIT), 2-0, and Oberlin College of Ohio, 3-0. The Yellowjackets advanced to the Sweet 16 where they lost, 1-0, to Montclair State University. Rochester finished the campaign with a 15-3-2 record and was ranked No. 12 in the final Division III poll.

In late November, Swanger was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Men's Soccer Team after voting by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Swanger played in 16 of the 20 matches. He missed the season finale vs. Case Reserve and the three NCAA matches with an injury. He finished second in scoring with nine goals and three assists for 21 points. He scored three gamewinning goals this year.

He earned All-UAA honors in each of his first three seasons and was named to the UAA's All-Academic Team as a sophomore and junior. He carries a 3.97 cumulative grade point average, majoring in financial economics. He is completing his Pre-Med requirements. Swanger was a research assistant tracking information on state legislatures for a political science professor. He volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital with Health Reach medical care for the homeless.
