Chris Cvecko Goal Leads Spartan Men to Victory in Rain-Soaked Home Opener

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Junior midfielder Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored in the 50th minute to lead the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University in a rain-soaked 2014 home opener at DiSanto Field.

The Spartans (3-1-1) register their third consecutive victory, while the Yellow Jackets (1-4) drop their third in a row.

Both teams had to navigate adverse conditions, as the most of the game was played during a heavy downpour. After a scoreless first half, CWRU struck shortly after the break. Cvecko received a feed in the box from junior forward Matthew Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley N.W.) and slipped a shot through the hands of Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Ryan Asbury for the lone marker of the game.

CWRU freshman goalkeeper Calvin Boyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made three saves to record his second consecutive shutout. Overall, the Spartan defense has not allowed a goal in 281:15.

For the match, CWRU outshot BW, 13-4, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
