Three Second-Half Goals Power Spartans Past Wilmington

Three Second-Half Goals Power Spartans Past Wilmington

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Freshman forward Michael Balog (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and junior midfielder Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each enjoyed three-point nights as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team defeated Wilmington College, 3-0, on Saturday night at DiSanto Field.

The victory lifts the Spartans' record to 5-3-1, while Wilmington drops to 5-3-1.

After a scoreless first half, Balog broke the deadlock in the 50th minute after outracing the entire Quaker defense down the right side and burying a shot just inside the far post. The unassisted marker was his fifth of the season, tops among all Spartans.

Cvecko added an insurance marker in the 73rd minute. The junior captain's goal was set up after an initial attempt from Balog was blocked by a Wilmington defender. Cvecko collected the rebound and sent a shot past the outstretched arms of Wilmington goalkeeper Daniel Wicks for his fourth goal of the season.

Eight minutes later, sophomore midfielder Brandon White (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) put the game out of reach with his first goal of the year.

Freshman goalkeeper Calvin Boyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made five saves to register his fourth win of the season. In five wins this season, Spartan netminders have combined to allow just one goal.

Wilmington led in corner kick attempts, 5-3, while the Spartans held a 25-8 advantage in shots.  Junior forward Matthew Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley N.W.) led the Spartans with five shots attempted.
