From NYU Athletics
The New York University men's soccer team earned a thrilling 3-2
double-overtime victory at home against the College of Staten
Island on Wednesday night, September 3, at Gaelic Park in
Riverdale, NY.
"We showed character tonight in the overtime periods," NYU Head
Coach Joe Behan said. "We stayed
cohesive."
NYU headed to the locker room at the end of the first half trailing
1-0 after CSI scored in the 30th minute. Despite the early hole,
the Violets stormed back just 10 minutes into the second.
In the 55th minute, freshman forward Malcolm
Montilus took the outlet pass from sophomore
midfielder Petter Aasa and found himself ahead
of the Dolphins' defense and keeper with a wide open net for an
easy first-career goal. Just 45 seconds later, sophomore
forward Reece Barton received the header pass
from Montilus and beat the CSI keeper on the two-one-one to put the
Violets up 2-1.
With time winding down, the Dolphins were able to knot the contest
up at 2-2 in the 83rd minute on a long shot from outside the box to
send the game into extra time.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Violets found
themselves in the right position in the 106th minute. Sophomore
midfielder Hector Rojas sent a nice cross from
the left post and it was bodied in by sophomore
forward Bryan Walsh for the golden goal.
"We stuck to our strategy and came out winners," Behan said. "We
were able to get the result we wanted."
