The No. 19-ranked University of Chicago men's soccer team made its return to the NCAA postseason a memorable one by beating College of St. Scholastica 3-1 in snowy conditions on Saturday.

The Maroons (12-5-2) will next face host Wartburg College (12-3-6) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship at 1:00 PM on Sunday. St. Scholastica finished their season with a record of 20-3.

"Today was a wild one played through a few inches of snow," said Head Coach Mike Babst. "The guys did a great job of finding the game through some pretty extreme conditions. We have a quick turnaround now to get ready for a very good Wartburg team."

The Saints entered the game on a 17-match win streak with an offense that was averaging close to six goals per game this year. However, the Maroons struck first as sophomore forward Brenton Desai scored on a header in the 15th minute. Sophomore defender DJ Weis assisted on the goal.

St. Scholastica tied the game in the 25th minute and the two teams went into halftime even at 1-1. Desai struck again right out of the gate in the second half. The sophomore tallied his team-leading ninth goal in the 48th minute off another assist by Weis. UChicago then put the game out of reach in the 85th minute with a goal by sophomore midfielder Chris Mathis, assisted by senior midfielder Nic Lopez.

UChicago finished with a 13-10 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Hill Bonin (10-2-2) got the win with three saves and one goal allowed in his 90 minutes of work.
