Rochester Claims Flower City Crown With 3-0 Win

Rochester Claims Flower City Crown With 3-0 Win

Rochester found its offensive rhythm on Sunday afternoon, rattled in three goals, and wound up winning the 2014 Men's Flower City Soccer Classic at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The 3-0 victory over Buffalo State College, coupled with St. John Fisher's 1-0 win over SUNY Morrisville, left all four teams with three points in the standings – one win and one loss apiece.

Head-to-head result was inconclusive (Morrisville beat UR, 3-2, in OT Friday night and Buffalo State edged Fisher, 1-0, in OT). It went to goal difference as the determining factor. Rochester finished at plus-two (five goals scored, three allowed). Fisher and Morrisville were both even on goal difference (1-1 for Fisher, 3-3 for Morrisville). Buffalo State was minus two (one scored, three allowed).

The Yellowjackets needed a win by at least two goals to repeat as Flower City champions. Buffalo State could have won the match with an outright victory or a tie.

Jarvis D'Souza scored the first goal, Nick Pastore lined in the second, and Ben Keeton tacked on the third.

Tournament MVP honors went to Pastore. He had a goal Sunday and an assist on Friday night. He hit the left upright Sunday afternoon, less than 30 seconds before halftime with Rochester already up, 2-0.

The Best Defensive Player was Rochester defender Sean Daly. The Yellowjacket defense was well organized and kept the Bengals out of shooting range. BSC didn't get a shot on goal until 20 minutes into the second half when Bryan Daigler fired right at Rochester goalkeeper Michael Shatkin after a left wing cross from Joe Vucic.

The tournament's Best Offensive Player was Danny Peckham of SUNY Morrisville. He had a first half assist on Friday night, then scored the equalizer with less than three minutes to play in regulation against Rochester. Morrisville scored in the fifth minute of OT to win it.

Alex Cassells forced the save of the afternoon – at either end of the field. With five minutes left, the BSC sophomore hit a rising shot from just inside the edge of the penalty area which was well-saved by a diving Marshal Davidson. He replaced Shatkin with just under 14 minutes remaining.

Between them, Shatkin and Davidson had two saves (one each). For BSC, starter Hunter Hein made four saves. Robby Kuhnie played 7:15 in the first half in relief of Hein who was injured on a goalmouth collision. He left the game but came back with 19 minutes left in the first period. Hein finished the game.

Rochester's first goal came from D'Souza after a crisp pass from Shane Dobles on left wing. That was a scant five minutes after D'Souza had an open look at goal but pulled his shot just wide of the top right hand corner.

The Yellowjackets made it 2-0 just two minutes before the halftime whistle. Jack Thesing was held at the edge of the penalty area on the left side. It set up a free kick. Pastore stood over the ball. The BSC defense anticipated a chip into the box with a group of home jerseys lurking. Pastore hit the ball hard and low, driving it into the lower left hand corner of the goal before Hein could react.

He nearly had a second goal in the first period, cracking a 25-yarder off the left post with less than 30 seconds left.

A minute into the second half, Jeff Greblick headed the ball off the crossbar for the Yellowjackets after a chipped pass from Alex Swanger on left wing. Swanger made a long solo run down the left side in the 61st minute, outfoxing defenders in the area before his shot was covered from close range by Hein.

Griffin Drake figured in two chances as Rochester pushed for a third goal to ensure the win (UR needed at least a two-goal victory). In the 66th minute, his shot from right wing hooked just past the left post. Two minutes later, he ran the same route and hit a ground service across the goalmouth that was just beyond the reach of Tyler Buck.

The third goal came in the 70th minute. Keeton took a hard shot from the center of the box. Hein saved it and the rebound came directly back to Keeton who tucked it into the lower right corner of the goal.
