Brandeis Tops Mass Maritime, 1-0, in UAA Tuneup

The Brandeis University men's soccer team used a goal early in the second half tonight to defeat visiting Mass. Maritime Academy, 1-0, in a non-conference tune-up before a busy Homecoming Weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams were scoreless through the first half, with Brandeis outshooting Mass. Maritime, 10-4. Shots on goal were 5-2 in favor of the Judges.
  • Brandeis sophomore midfielder Patrick Flahive (Glenwood, Ill./Worcester Acad.) put the first shot of the second half on goal, 31 seconds in.
  • Just over a minute after that, he flicked home the game-winner. Junior midfielder Josh Ocel (No. Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Acad.) took a free kick from the left about 20 yards out. Flahive got a head on it to provide the game's only scoring.
  • The Buccaneers had three narrow misses in the game's final 15 minutes. Rookie Brendan Gawron saw a shot trickle just wide in the 75th minute. In the 88th, Brandeis senior Conor Lanahan (Avon, Conn./Avon) cleared a ball off the line
  • In the final minute of play, a free kick from MMA's Matthew McDonough was sent into a scrum, and it was redirected on net by a Brandeis player, but senior Kenn Fryer (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) snatched it out of the air.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • For the game, the Judges outshot Mass. Maritime, 24-8, 9-3 in shots on goal.
  • Fryer made two saves for his third shutout of the season.
  • MMA's Joe Cohen had eight stops in the losing effort.
  • The Judges improved to 10-0 in one-goal games this season, including seven matches decided by a 1-0 score.
  • Flahive's goal was his first of the season and the second if his career. It was his first collegiate game-winner.
  • With the assist, Ocel has been involved in Brandeis's last five goals, picking up assists on the last four and scoring the one prior to that.
  • Ocel now leads the UAA with seven helpers. He has 16 in his career, moving him into Brandeis's career top 25.

  • Brandeis is now 11-1-1 on the season.
  • This was their 7th shutout of the campaign.
  • MMA falls to 4-7.
  • Brandeis is now 9-1-1 all-time against the Buccaneers.
