CWRU Defeats Rochester 1-0 to Move Into Tie Atop UAA

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University senior captain Alex Masciopinto's first collegiate goal proved to be the game-deciding score on Sunday afternoon, as the Spartans picked up a 1-0 win over the University of Rochester in a University Athletic Association matchup at DiSanto Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 11-2-1 on the year with the win, their second straight, while also raising their UAA ledger to 3-1-0 for the campaign.  With three conference games left in the season, CWRU moved into a tie for first in the UAA with Brandeis University, which lost to Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday.

Emory, who CWRU defeated 2-0 on Friday night, stands at 2-1-0 in UAA play and could make it a first-place trio in the UAA with a win over Carnegie Mellon later in the day on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, Masciopinto broke the tie just over a minute into the second period.  Coming down the pitch, senior Matthew Zembas changed fields, sending a pass to Masciopinto on the near side, who set himself before launching an arching shot past the Rochester keeper for the game's only goal.  Zembas earned his first assist of the year on the play.

Besides the one goal, defenses ruled the game on Sunday with each team registering just four chances on goal during the contest.  CWRU goalkeeper Christian Grimme made four saves in the contest, improving to 5-1-0 for the campaign and registering his fifth individual shutout.  Grimme also lowered his season goals-against average to 0.28.

With the loss, Rochester fell to 4-3-5 in 2015, including a 0-1-3 UAA mark.
