Second-Half Rally Gives Yellowjackets Draw at Carnegie Mellon

Second-Half Rally Gives Yellowjackets Draw at Carnegie Mellon

From University of Rochester Athletics

Rochester rallied for two second half goals and goalkeeper Redd Brown rewarded the scoring by making two terrific saves to help Rochester duel Carnegie Mellon to a 2-2 tie in double overtime on Friday evening.

This was Rochester's fourth straight overtime result and well worth the effort. The Yellowjackets are 4-2-5 overall, 0-0-3 in the University Athletic Association heading into Sunday's match at Case Western Reserve. Carnegie Mellon is 8-2-2 overall, 1-1-1 in the UAA.

The Yellowjackets fell behind, 2-0, before the match was 10 minutes old. Sean McPherson scored the opener at 6:11. A Yelloowjacket defender deflected the ball. McPherson got to it and shot it high off the post into the net. At 9:27, Philip Petrakian made it 2-0. He touched the ball around a Rochester defender, circled him, and ran to score at the opposite corner of the net.

Rochester pulled back the first goal at 46:04. Off a corner kick by Alex DiPerna, Tyler Buck hit a diving header into the net to make it a one-goal game. Another corner kick indirectly earned the Yellowjackets their equalizer. Buck headed the CK toward the post where it was cleared off the line by a Carnegie defender. The rebound came to Mike Sergeant and he scored at 76:30 to knot it at 2-2.

Brown's first tough save came in the closing minutes of the first half. CMU's William Webb unleashed a powerful shot from 25 yards out that Brown hit high in the air and then had to grab to prevent the goal. In the final minute of the first overtime, Carnegie's Zack Masciopinto bicycled a shot towards the opposite post. Brown dove through the air and caught it.
