Chicago Earns 3-0 Senior Day Win Over Aurora

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day in record-tying fashion with a 3-0 victory against visiting Aurora University on Sunday.

The No. 1-ranked Maroons (15-0) tied the school records for wins in a season and shutouts in a season (11). The Spartans fell to 6-9-2 overall.

Sunday was Senior Day for UChicago's six seniors – forward Brad Bozych, forward Brenton Desai, midfielder Alec Magdaleno, forward Chris Mathis, defender George Voulgaris and defender DJ Weis. Over their four years on the team, the Maroons have reached the NCAA postseason twice and own a record of 48-17-7 for a .715 winning percentage.

The scoring began only 68 seconds into the game. Sophomore forward Matthew Koh got through a crowd in the box on the front right, knocked a right-footed shot off the goalkeeper and in. The assist went to sophomore forward Max Lopez.

Four minutes in, Aurora was whistled for a foul in the box to give UChicago a penalty kick opportunity. Desai stepped to the line and buried it to make the game 2-0. The score remained that way through halftime.

Desai made it 3-0 in the 54th minute for his eighth goal of the season. Junior defender Stacey Reimann sped his way into the box from the right wing and centered the ball straight to Desai, who converted. His 32 career goals currently tie him for fourth in UChicago history.

The senior forward pressed for the hat trick and had several narrow misses. He hit the post on a free kick at the 62:08 mark.

Overall, the Maroons outshot the Spartans 25-3 in the match, with a 7-4 corner kick advantage. Junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin (15-0) made one save to get the victory in 69 minutes of work. Freshman Theo Jacobs took over for the remaining 21 minutes, making one save in his collegiate debut.
