Rochester Wins First Road Test, Topping St. John Fisher 2-1

From University of Rochester Athletics

The 10th ranked University of Rochester men's soccer team remained unbeaten in 2016 with a 2-1 come from behind victory over St. John Fisher College at Growney Stadium on Tuesday.

Rochester moves to 6-0 on the year while St. John Fisher drops to 1-6-1.

The Yellowjackets used second half goals from Aleks Dombrowski and Mitch Volis to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit to the Cardinals.

Visiting Rochester controlled the play in the opening minutes, earning two corner kicks and four total shots in the first seven minutes, forcing Cardinal goalkeeper Joe Catalfamo to make one save in the process.

In the ninth minute, Fisher nearly scored first when Matthew Kaiser had a shot on net saved by UR's Patrick Conway, with the rebound going right back to Kaiser whose second attempt rattled off the crossbar.

After three more shots and an addition corner from UR, the Cardinals were able to break through in the 29th minute.  Kaiser found the back of the net this time, ripping a shot from the right side of the box to the low left corner, past a lunging Conway in the UR net.

The remaining 15 minutes of the half saw just one shot, by SJFC, sailing high of the net.  At the break, Rochester, playing its first road game of the season held an 8-5 shot edge and 3-0 lead in corners.

The Yellowjackets would even up the score in the 55th minute, when Dombrowski finished off a low cross from teammate Geoffrey Rouin.  The goal was Dombrowski's second of the year.

With just over 20 minutes left in the game, UR's Volis, a freshman, would give the 10th ranked 'Jackets the 2-1 lead, heading in a cross from the right side of the field by teammate Jeff Greblick.

Over the final minutes, Rochester's defense would limit the Cardinals to just one shot, with that chance going wide of the net, leading to the sixth straight win for UR.

From the stat sheet, the Yellowjackets finished with a 13-8 shot advantage while taking all five of the games corner kicks.  Conway ended up making four saves for UR while Catalfamo stopped five shots for the Cardinals.
