Rochester Blanks RIT in Overtime

Rochester Blanks RIT in Overtime

From University of Rochester Athletics

Considering the weather, the 86-minute lightning delay in the first half, and the 15 minute stoppage with 2:05 to play when the lights blew, this one ended probably the way it was meant to end.

On a penalty kick in overtime.

Bryce Ikeda drove the penalty kick into the lower left corner midway through the first overtime period to give the University of Rochester a 1-0 victory over RIT in the Hillside Community Shield Charity Match on Saturday evening.

Ikeda's goal boosted Rochester's record to 5-0. The Yellowjackets have won three games by 1-0 counts. RIT, which has three shutouts this year, is 2-3-1 overall.

The penalty was awarded for a foul in the area with two players vying for a ball from right wing. Rochester had a flurry of scoring opportunities in the last 20 minutes. RIT's keeper Peter Cinibulk made seven saves, six of them in that 20 minute burst.

Chances were sparse in the first half. Rochester's first good opportunity came a minute into the game. Jeff Greblick was put through on the right side of the box, one-on-one with Cinibulk. His low shot for the center of the net was saved.

RIT's Afram Meza had a goal called back for offside in the ninth minute. Two minutes later, Rochester's Ben Swanger led a four-on-two counterattack but Geoffrey Rouin couldn't get to a cross from right wing.

Meza provided a brilliant chance for RIT 20 minutes in – and it produced the best save of the season for Rochester's Patrick Conway. Meza stole the  ball and ran down the middle. He provided a perfect lead for Alex Ptucha on the left wing and Ptucha roared toward Conway. Ten yards off the end line, he shot, and Conway went down to smother it.

Swanger was in the middle of two other chances for the Yellowjackets in a steady rain. With eight minutes left, he squared a pass to Josh Cooley who shot high from the top of the season. Less than a minute later, Swanger put his chance over the crossbar.

Lightning was spotted with 6:36 left in the first half and the field emptied. Four more strikes kept the teams off the field for an hour and 26 minutes.

Rouin and Greblick nearly set up an opening goal 13 minutes into the second half. Rouin's corner kick went along the endline. Greblick pushed it along but Lasha Alkhazishvili couldn't get to it to tap it in.

Cinibulk made a good punch save as Greblick turned at the end of the box, then punched away a breakaway effort leading to a harmless corner kick.

With 16 minutes left, Ikeda dribbled through the defense, but couldn't find a seam to shoot and the RIT defenders took the ball away.  Rouin took off down the left wing off Swanger's lead but his shot drifted high for the top right corner.

In the final minute of regulation, Rouin had a breakaway down the left flank. His shot was punched out for a corner kick by Conway who then made a followup save off the corner on a shot by Greblick leading to a corner in the last 15 seconds.
