Joe Clarke Nets 430th Coaching Win as No. 10 Washington University Blanks NYU

The No. 10-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team rebounded from its first loss of the season to post a 4-0 win over New York University Friday in University Athletic Association (UAA) play at Francis Field in St. Louis.

The win for head coach Joe Clarke was the 430th of his career, tied for 27th most in men's college soccer history

WashU improved to 8-1-1 and 1-1-1 in the UAA, while New York dropped to 5-5-2, 1-2 in the UAA.

It took WashU just 63 seconds to score the first goal of the contest. Graduate student Jack West was taken down in the box and a penalty kick was awarded. Graduate student Ike Witte missed the PK, but got the rebound and buried it into the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Bears nearly made it 2-0 in the sixth minute following a corner kick by West. He sent the kick into the box and headers by both sophomore Ryan Sproule and junior Andrew Zingone went off the crossbar to keep it a one-goal game.

In the 15th minute, senior Corey Meehan took a long pass down the right side and sent a cross into the box that senior Nick Politan buried a shot into the upper 90. The goal for Politan was his first of the season and third of his career.

WashU had a 6-1 advantage in shots in the first half. 

Politan was involved in third goal of the game early in the second half after he set up senior Grant Baltes with a pass into the box that he buried with the left foot. Baltes' shot went off the crossbar and deflected off a defender into the back of the net. The goal for Baltes was his second of the season and ninth of his career.

Sophomore Camilo Haller rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 81st minute. The goal for Haller was his first of the season and second of career.

The Bears outshot New York 14-4 and had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Nick Tannenbaum made one save and the Bears' defense posted their eighth shutout of the year, third most in NCAA Division III.

WashU hosts Brandeis University (5-4-3, 0-1-2 UAA) Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
