The Emory University Men's Soccer team earned a much needed win to add to its NCAA tournament resume on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles knocked off the University of Rochester, 3-2, in overtime at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.
Emory finishes the regular season at 12-5-1 and 4-2-1 in UAA play while the Yellowjackets see their six-match unbeaten streak snapped to conclude the 2017 campaign at 11-3-3 and 4-2-1 in conference action. The Eagles now await to hear their NCAA tournament fate as teams will be announced Monday afternoon with the NCAA Division III selection show, beginning at 1:30 PM and can be seen live on NCAA.com. Emory last qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2014.
Senior Christian Meyer supplied the theatrics, scoring the golden goal 4:28 minutes into the first overtime period. Following a failed clear attempt by a Rochester defender, junior Tyler Santee dished the loose ball to Meyer who made a move to get around a defender before blistering a shot to the top right corner for the game-winner.
Rochester led off the scoring, firing the opening salvo at the 8:44 mark in the first half. Nik Angyal fired a shot through traffic that was saved by freshman Cole Gallagher. However, the rebound went to Bryce Ikeda, who directed it into the net.
The Yellowjackets maintained the 1-0 advantage until the 68th minute when junior Moustafa Khattab evened the score with his seventh marker of the season. Senior Jason McCartney slipped a pass in traffic to Khattab, who dribbled through the defenders before firing a shot past Rochester goalkeeper Redd Brown.
UofR answered almost instantly, taking the lead on an Angyal tally 50 seconds later. He moved around a defender and shot from the top of the box to just inside the near post to put Rochester in front, 2-1.
Santee found the equalizer with just under nine minutes left in regulation. Santee put a header on frame but was denied by Brown. The rebound, though, went straight back to Santee who converted the tying goal.
Meyer and McCartney were two of seven seniors that were honored prior to the start of match. Other honorees were Michael Carragher, Georges Daoud, Adam Ferguson, Cody Gardiner and Gabe Vasconcelos.
