NYU Cruises Past Hunter

NYU Cruises Past Hunter

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's soccer team doubled its win total with a 6-1 victory over Hunter College on Saturday, September 9, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

"This was a game we thought we'd be able to control and we did just that," said NYU Head Coach Kim Wyant.

Almost 30 minutes into the game, NYU (2-0-1) found the net to open up the scoring. Richie Rambarran tapped in the easy goal off of Pedro Goldberg's pass down the goal line following a dribbling display past two defenders on the wing.

NYU never looked back as it scored its next two goals within a minute of each other to go ahead 3-0. Matteo Carrieri Russo earned a penalty kick after a Hunter defender blocked his shot from right outside the box with his hand. Robert Shellow finished the job by collecting his first goal of the season via the penalty kick in the 36th minute. Maxi Rodriguez tallied his second score of the season less than a minute later, deflecting a shot off of the Hunter (0-4-0) goalkeeper.

Jake Velvel finished the half with his first collegiate goal, scoring his own tap-in off a set piece from Shellow. Shellow's work was not finished as he also scored a goal in the second half from the top of the box.

NOTABLES:

- Owen Smith registered his first goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 84:04 mark.

"We were able to connect on a pair of penalty kicks in back-to-back games," added Wyant. "We've been working on being more aggressive and we are succeeding."

- NYU outshot The Hawks 29-6, including 13-4 in shots on goal.

- Goalkeeper Grant Engel continued his solid start to the season as he did not allow a goal in 72:29 of action.

"This was a good win, but it's time to move forward," concluded Wyant. "We play three games in seven days, so it's important to take advantage of our depth and keep getting better."
