NYU Posts Road Win at Lehman

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's soccer team took an early lead and held on for a 1-0 victory over Lehman College at the Lancers' home field in the Bronx, NY, on Saturday, October 21.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Violets (8-5-1), while Lehman dropped to 11-4-1.

The game's only goal came in the 20th minute as Ricardo Mitrano collected a rebound off Lehman goalkeeper Chris Mulhullond and drove it into the net at 20:08. It was Mitrano's third goal of the season.

"Jake (Velvel) took a header off a corner kick and sent it to the goal," said Assistant Coach Joseph Ruesgen. "Ricardo was then able to finish amid a scrum of people."

Grant Engel pitched the shutout for the Violets, rejecting all three shots he faced. NYU took nine shots overall, while the Lancers managed seven.

"I thought we played a tough game against a good opponent," Ruesgen said. "We played the game the way we had to play.  We needed to keep it out of our half on a challenging playing surface that was not conducive to our usual style," Ruesgen explained.

PITCH NOTES:

- Engel has now recorded all eight of the Violets' victories this season, as well as all three shutouts.

- Owen Smith and Drew Enyedi led NYU with two shots each.

- NYU has finished its non-conference regular-season schedule with a record of 8-1-1.
