Washington University Blanks DePauw in Home Opener

Junior Ryan Sproule netted a pair of goals to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over DePauw University in the 2017 home opener Friday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU remains unbeaten at 2-0-1, while DePauw suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 1-1-1.

Sproule scored an unassisted goal in the 14th minute after misplay by a DePauw defender led to an open net. The Bears outshot the Tigers 7-5 in the first half.

Senior goalkeeper Colin McCune came up huge for the Bears with 1:25 left before half after he stopped a breakaway and then the rebound went wide right.

Sproule found the back of the net in the 54th minute when he headed home a free kick from junior Ben Strozewski. The goal for Sproule was his team-leading third of the year and 17th of his career.

WashU scored again off a set piece in the 57th minute, this time on a corner kick. Senior Anthony Law headed home the kick from from freshman Sean Connors for his first career goal.

McCune (2-0-1) picked up the win making one save in 83 minutes played, while freshman Bryant Hales played the final seven minutes with one save. WashU outshot DePauw 14-7, and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

WashU continues a three-game homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 13, against Webster University. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and will be broadcast live on the Bear Sports Network. 

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with DePauw, 11-2-4 … The Bears have allowed just one goal in 290 minutes played this season … The two teams combined for 32 fouls and four cards.
