Max Fabian of Brandeis Sets Pool Record in 1650 Free at WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior Max Fabian continued his fantastic run in the mile today, winning the event at WPI's Gompei Invitational and setting a facility record in the process. 

Fabian swam the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:33.50, a seven-second margin of victory over the runner-up from host WPI. Fabian was just 17 seconds off an NCAA Championship "B" cut. He was also 20 seconds off his own school-record time, set last year at the UAA championships. Fabian had one other top-10 performance on the second day of action at WPI, placing sixth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:23.46.

Rookie Edan Zitelny added a pair of top-10 finishes on Day Two, giving him four for the weekend. He came in fourth in the 400 IM, with a time of 4:20.63, just one-tenth of a second out of third place. He also came in sixth in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 58.47 seconds. 

Sophomore Brian Luk matched his top performance from Day One, coming in fifth in the 100 freestyle (48.02 seconds). He also scored points in 200 free with a time of 1:49.88, good for 13th place. 

Also scoring in two individual races for the Judges were sophomore David Lazarovich and rookie Eb Weber. Lazarovich placed in the breaststroke events, coming in eighth in the 200 (2:20.28) and 13th in the 50 (29.25 seconds). Weber was 11th in the 50 back (22.81 seconds) and 13th in the 200 butterfly (2:10.77).

Brandeis's two relays both came in sixth place. The 200 medley relay team of Zitelny, Lazarovich, Weber and Luk touched with a time of 1:41.40, while the 400 free relay of Fabian, Zitelny, Lazarovich and Luk came in in 3:21.10.

As a team, the Judges finished with 994 points to finish in fifth place overall. 

The Judges return to action next semester at home against Trinity on Jan. 18.
