From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team
won two dual meets during its home tri meet with Allegheny College
and Washington & Lee University. The Tartans topped the Gators
230-54 and the Generals 213-75. The Tartans are now 6-0 in
dual action.
The Tartans opened with a win in the 200-yard medley relay as
senior Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville
Catholic), sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New
Trier) and freshmen Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint
Peter's Prep) and Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John
Burroughs School) touched in 1:35.63.
The 1,000-yard freestyle was won by senior Andrew
Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) with a time of 9:57.63.
Following Yee's win, The Tartans swept the next three events as
Walsh led a sweep of the 200-yard freestyle touching in a time of
1:43.48. Freshman Josh Taekman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel
Hill) was second in 1:47.22 as fellow freshman Alex
Glidden (Peabody, Mass./St. John's Prep) was third in 1:48.82.
In the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Jay Jin (Canton,
Mich./Canton) touched first first in a time of 54.71 as
freshman Marcel Legros (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown)
was second in 54.75 and freshman Michael
DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) was third in 54.80.
In the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Brian Jay (Wayne,
Pa./Conestoga) won the event with a time of 59.95 while
junior Peter Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow
Hills East) and Chu touched in 1:00.25 and 1:01.42, respectively,
to place second and third.
Senior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional)
won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.58 before the Tartans swept four
more events to close out the meet. The Tartans swept the 200-yard
breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 500-yard freestyle and the
400-yard IM.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Taekman touched first in 1:57.71
followed by DiBacco and freshman Benjamin
Pierce (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) with times of
1:58.31 and 2:01.33. Jay touched the wall in 2:12.57 to win
the 200-yard breaststroke with Podniesinski finishing in 2:13.79
followed by senior Roy Sung (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) in
2:14.95.
Walsh won his second individual event of the afternoon by touching
in 4:44.46 in the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Edward
Healy (Lincroft, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and Glidden
were second and third in 4:54.03 and 4:55.30. Junior Matthew
Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods), Campbell and Yee swept the
400-yard IM with times of 4:09.25, 4:13.18 and 4:19.08.
Carnegie Mellon closed the meet with a victory in the 200-yard
freestyle relay. The team of Steinhouse, Walsh, Taekman and
Jay touched in 1:27.44.
In diving, junior Yannos Michailidis (Athens,
Greece/Hellenic American) won the one-meter with 152.62
points while freshman Noah Fatsi (Midlothian, Va./Trinity
Episcopal) placed second with 145.57. On the three-meter
board, Fatsi placed first with 154.87 points and Michailidis
took second with 105.82 points.
