From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University rising junior Logan Smith was recently presented with the Cynthia Earley Scholarship at the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim, held annually since 1982, is considered one of the top open water swims in the United States, and features races of 4.4 miles and one mile across the body of water.  In addition to the races, the event serves as a fundraiser with proceeds benefitting the Maryland Area March of Dimes and the Chesapeake Bay Trust.

Smith earned the scholarship by being the top fundraising student at the event, collecting over $1,800 in contributions for the charities.  In addition to his work out of the pool, Smith finished 39th out of the 650 competitors overall at the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim, and fifth in the non-wetsuit division.

The Cynthia Earley Scholarship has awarded at least $1,000 to the top fundraising student at the event each year since 1999.

Smith, who hails from Arnold, Maryland (Broadneck), recently completed his sophomore season with the Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving team.  In 2015-16, he turned in the third-fastest times by a Spartan in both the 100-yard butterfly (51.44) and 200-yard butterfly (1:53.42), while also earning UAA All-Academic honors.

The Spartans finished the 2015-16 season with a 10-1 record in dual meets, and placed 33rd at the 2016 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.
