Washington University Finishes Wraps Up Strong Weekend

The Washington University in St. Louis swimming & diving program wrapped up a weekend in which it had student-athletes competing in three separate locations including Miami (Ohio) University, Wheaton (Ill.) College and Grinnell College. 

The Bears totaled 10 in route to bypassing Miami in the final standings. No.1-ranked Division III Denison University placed first with 1,467 points while the No. 7-ranked Bears men totaled 838 points to place second ahead of Division I Miami (762), No. 2-ranked Division III Emory University (753) and Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (511).

On Saturday, WashU posted mutliple top-10 Division III times led by junior Brandon Lum's Division III top-time in the 200 fly. Lum placed first in the event with a season-best time of 1:47.68 also earning B cut standards with junior Jordan Wheeler (1:50.69 in prelims). Wheeler placed third in the finals (1:51.01) while junior Jason Hsu just missed the B cut standard during prelims (1:51.30).

The WashU men also dominated the 200 back as sophomore Peyton Wilson placed first with a B cut time of 1:46.28 which ranks second in Division III this season. Junior Kevin Van Cleave also scored a B cut time that ranks within the top-10 of Division III when he touched the wall in 1:49.64 during prelims.

Also scoring B cut times for the men were freshman Alex Poellinger in the 1,650 free (15:56.86), Seth Ritter in the 1,650 free (16:00.82), sophomore Chase Van Pattenin the 100 free (45.20 in prelims), sophomore Simon Deshusses in the 200 breast (2:04.12) and Van Cleave in the 100 free (45.39 from the 400 free relay split).

Van Cleave also paired with junior Andrew Pek, Deshusses and Van Patten in the 400 free relay to place third overall with a B cut time of 3:02.61. The time is a season-best for the Bears and ranks fifth in Division III.

Wheaton Invite Highlights

The Bears men placed second overall with 890.5 points behind UW-Stevens Point (1,141.5) but ahead of Wheaton (682), Hope (317) and Augustana (293).

The men totaled two first place finishes led by senior Landon Bennett's B cut time in the 1,650 free (16:08.12). Also placing first for the men was sophomore Vincent Huang in the 200 breast (2:07.25).
