The University of Chicago men's tennis team opened up day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships with a flurry of match wins on Friday.
The Maroons went 17-3 in singles play as seven players won both of their matches. Doubles was also successful with an 8-2 mark, with three pairings winning two matches. Senior Deepak Sabada, senior Ankur Bhargava, sophomore Sven Kranz, freshman David Liu and freshman Nicolas Chua each went 4-0 on the day.
"Overall we had a very solid day," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We competed hard and fought with everything we had, which allowed us to pick up some great wins. While much has been made of our newcomers, and rightfully so, it was our returners who set the tone and stepped up in a big way. They are leading by example and showing the rest of the team what it means to represent the University of Chicago. Tomorrow's matches will be even tougher and will help will give us a chance to see who our dogs will be and who we can rely on to compete with 100 percent effort in big matches."
