The University of Chicago men's tennis team began its postseason play on a high note with a 5-0 sweep of Carthage College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday.
The No. 8-ranked Maroons (16-5) advance to the regional final to take on No. 18-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College at Noon on Sunday. The Red Men conclude their season at 22-7.
In its second-straight NCAA appearance, UChicago made quick work of the visitors with dominating displays in doubles and singles. The Maroons found their footing as the matches went on and were particularly sharp at the net in doubles action. The No. 2 tandem (freshman Charlie Pei/sophomore Peter Leung) and No. 3 team (sophomore Luke Tsai/junior Max Hawkins) each swept the final six games of their respective matches to win by identical 8-2 margins. After a tie at 5-5, sophomores Nicolas Chua and David Liu turned on the jets at the end to earn the 8-5 victory.
With three team points already in the bag, UChicago turned its attention to singles needing only two wins to get the requisite five that would end the matchup. The hosts blitzed throughout the lineup, and Pei was off the courts first with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 4. The race was on for the fifth team point and four of the matches were poised to end with one game to go in each. It was Liu who rung up the win 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 as his match concluded seconds before junior Sven Kranz hit a winner to end No. 3.
