Chicago Rolls Through Day One of ITA Regional With 19-1 Singles Record

The University of Chicago men's tennis team got off to a roaring start and blasted through the competition at day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships on Friday.

A total of 128 singles players and 64 doubles tandems are competing in the main draw of the four-day tournament.

UChicago's players dominated the opening two rounds and rolled to a near-perfect 19-1 singles mark. The Maroons did not lose a single set in the 19 victories. Nine different players went 2-0, including defending single champion sophomore Nicolas Chua, freshman Charlie Pei, sophomore David Liu, junior Sven Kranz, freshman Max Liu, sophomore Peter Leung, sophomore Michael Selin, freshman Jonathan Li and sophomore Luke Tsai. Selin had one of the most impressive wins of the day with a 6-4, 6-0 win over the No. 6 seed from Washington University-St. Louis.

In doubles, UChicago went 8-2 on the day. Three tandems won both their matches – Max Liu/Pei, Chua/Liu and Tsai/junior Max Hawkins.
