Rochester Sweeps Past Messiah, Ben Shapiro Wins #100

The University of Rochester men's tennis team recorded an impressive performance in a 9-0 sweep of Messiah College on Tuesday afternoon during the team's spring break Florida trip.
 
UR senior Ben Shapiro joined the 100-win club (in singles and doubles combined) as he was a double winner along with three other Yellowjackets.  Joining him with two wins on the day were freshman Masaru Fujimaki, senior Ian Baranowski and junior Sam Leeman.

Also picking up wins on the day were senior Ben Mermelstein, who captured the match clinching point and freshman Kevin Hunt who won his first collegiate match.
 
Rochester moves to 3-3 with the win and Messiah drops to 2-4.
 
UR started out strong with an 8-0 win from the 3rd doubles team of Fujimaki and Aaron Mevorach.  Leeman and Baranowski then responded with an 8-3 win at #1 doubles and Shapiro and Andrew Nunno then completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at #2.
 
In singles, Shapiro picked up the first point, winning 6-1, 6-1 at #2 over Connor Graybeal.  Mermelstein then won the clincher at #6, defeating Blake Ross 6-1, 6-0.
 
Baranowski played at #3 and defeated Devin Esch 6-1, 6-1 while Leeman topped Dustin Innerst 6-2, 6-0 at #4.  Rounding out singles play, Fujimaki won 6-0, 6-3 over Tim Dunn at the top spot and Hunt picked up the win at #5 by a 6-2, 6-3 score over Austin Warren.
