Rochester Wins Fourth Consecutive Match, Topping Union 9-0

The University of Rochester men's tennis team got back to .500 on the season with a defeat of Union College by a 9-0 score on Sunday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.
 
Five athletes from Rochester (7-7) were double winners led by seniors Ben Shapiro and Ian Baranowski who played at #1 and #2 singles and doubles.  Classmate Ben Mermelstein was also a double-winner along with sophomore Aaron Mevorach and junior Ryan Zu.

The loss drops Union to 2-7 on the season.  The Dutchmen are coached by former UR player and assistant coach Brian Bowman who is in his first season as head coach in Schenectady.
 
Rochester's #2 doubles team of Baranowski and Mevorach got things started with an 8-2 win over Spencer Fontein and Max Sandberg by an 8-2 score.  Mermelstein and Zu then won 8-4 over a pair of John's, Shanley and Kodera, from Union for a 2-0 lead in the 3rd doubles slot.  Shapiro and Andrew Nunno made it a clean sweep of doubles after winning at #1 by an 8-6 score over Max McGeown and Brendan Conry Jr. of Union.
 
In singles, Rochester junior Sam Leeman got things started with a straight set win over Sandberg at #4, winning 6-1, 6-0.  Baranowski then won the clinching point of the match in impressive fashion, dispatching Conry Jr. at #2 6-0, 6-0.
 
Mevorach won 6-3, 6-1 over Fontein at #3 and Shapiro topped McGeown 6-4, 6-0 at #1 to give the Yellowjackets the 7-0 lead.  Rounding out the match, Mermelstein won 6-0, 6-0 over Kodera at #6 while Zu topped Shanley in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to finish off the sweep.
