The Emory men's tennis team opened defense of its UAA Championship on a successful note with a Friday quarterfinal-round win over Rochester. The No. 2-ranked Eagles won for the seventh straight time and raised their overall record to 15-4 following a 9-0 triumph over the Yellowjackets who slipped to 9-10. The three-day event is being held at the Sanlando Park Tennis Complex in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
Emory jumped out to a 2-0 edge after the No. 3 doubles team of junior David Omsky and Jonathan Jemison and the No. 2 tandem of junior Max Renke and sophomore Adrien Bouchet notched wins. The Eagles completed the sweep after the duo of junior Scott Rubinstein and sophomore James Spauldingscrapped their way to a 9-7 come-from-behind victory over Masaru Fujimaki and Aaron Mevorach at the No. 1 post, their 12th win in 19 outings this spring.
Emory breezed through singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. At No. 5, senior Josh Goodman put Emory ahead by a 4-0 margin after topping Mevorach, 6-1, 6-2, which represented his 10th straight win and 13th against three setbacks this spring. The Eagles clinched the match when senior Aman Manji defeated Sam Leeman at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1. Shortly after Manji's outcome, sophomore Jonathan Jemison pocketed his team-high tying (Manji) 15th win this spring with a 6-2, 6-0 verdict at No. 2 vs. Fujimaki. Other singles winners included Bouchet at No. 3, Alec Josepher at No. 5 and Rubinstein at No. 6.
