From University of Chicago Athletics

University of Chicago men's tennis player David Liu became the second Maroon student-athlete to earn Academic All-American distinction during the 2016-17 year on Tuesday. The junior was voted onto the 2017 Academic All-America Division III At-Large Team as a Third Team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Liu and junior football running back Chandler Carroll were both picked as Academic All-Americans this past year. Liu also becomes the first Academic All-American in UChicago men's tennis history.

An economics major, Liu played at No. 1 singles for the Maroon men's tennis squad that finished at No. 9 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings. The team defeated 14 nationally-ranked opponents en route to reaching the NCAA Round of 16.

Liu posted an 11-4 singles record and a 5-2 doubles mark. He earned his third career ITA All-American award after winning the 2016 ITA Central Region singles championship and advancing to the ITA Oracle Cup. He already ranks in the program's top 10 for career victories – 64-14 in singles and 54-25 in doubles. Liu was also named to the University Athletic Association (UAA) All-Academic Team in 2016 and 2017.
