NYU Competes at ITA Northeast Regionals

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's tennis team completed its first day of play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday, October 1, at Hobart and WIlliam Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY.

In singles play, four Violets -- seniors Matt DeMichiel (8-3) and Umberto Setter (8-0), sophomore Benedict Teoh (9-7) and freshman Vishal Walia (9-7), won their Round 1 matches. In Round 2, DeMichiel defeated Ramapo College's Willen Feygin 6-4, 6-3, while Setter bested Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Xavier Oshinowo 4-6, 6-2, 11-9. Both athletes will compete in Round 3 on Sunday.

"Both Matt and Umberto played very well," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy. "Umberto was tested in the second match, and although he was down in the first set and in the tiebreaker, he didn't give up. Matt faced a tough opponent in the second round, but his experience allowed him to make it through."

In doubles play, both NYU pairs competing advanced to Round 3 of the tournament. DeMichiel and Teoh defeated SUNY Oneonta's Joseph D'Orazio and Mike Nelson 8-0 in Round 1 and The College of New Jersey's Jack August and Mike Stanley 9-8 in Round 2, while Setter and freshman Zeb Zheng beat Vassar College's Jeremy Auh and Allen Sokolov (8-2) and Skidmore College's Steven Koulouris and Lucas Pickering (8-5), respectively, in the first two rounds of competition.
