Junior Andrew Nunno started off his 2016-17 campaign by going a perfect 8-0 across singles and doubles competition, winning the B flight singles competition and A doubles bracket at the St. Lawrence Fall Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Nunno defeated freshman teammate Yifan Shen 6-2, 6-0 in the B singles final and then paired with senior Sam Leeman in the A doubles flight to win 8-4 over teammates Masaru Fujimaki and Sahaj Somani.
To reach the all UR final, Nunno topped Ithaca's Liam Spiegel 6-2, 6-4 while Shen won a marathon three set match over Jared Fields of Ithaca. Shen won the first set 7-5, dropped the second 2-6 and then won a third set 13-11.
In doubles, Nunno and Leeman won 8-4 over Jonah Salita and Danny Kot of Hobart while Fujimaki and Somani were 8-3 winners over Elliot Soland and Kevin Frommer of host St. Lawrence, setting up the all Rochester final in that flight as well.
Fujimaki was on the short end of a tough semifinal match in the A flight singles competition, losing to Salita in three sets 7-5, 5-7 and 10-8. In the B doubles main draw, Shen and Tanmay Thakkar lost to Nathan Wolff and Fields of Ithaca by an 8-3 score in the semifinals.
