CWRU Records Second Consecutive Sweep in 9-0 Win Over Hope

The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team rolled to its second-straight sweep on Friday, claiming a 9-0 win at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

The Spartans improved to 11-8 with the win, while Hope dropped to 5-10 with the loss.

CWRU claimed wins in all three doubles matches on Friday.  First to finish was the second doubles pairing of freshmen Jonathan Powell and Neil Mabee, who topped Michael Kiley and Timothy Roe 8-0.  Sophomore Sam Concannon and freshman Matthew Chen followed with an 8-4 win at third doubles over David Bacon and Matt Werkman, and senior James Fojtasek and sophomore Anthony Kanam added an 8-6 win at first doubles over Danny Kroeze and Mark VanderStoep.

In singles play, freshman Josh Hsia was the first to secure a victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Justin Folkert at sixth singles.  Concannon then followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Carter Smiley at fifth singles to clinch the team victory.

Adding singles wins on Friday were Kanam (6-1, 6-2 over Kiley at third singles), Chen (6-3, 6-2 over VanderStoep at second singles), Fojtasek (6-1, 6-1 at first singles) and junior Rob Stroup (6-1, 6-2 at fourth singles).
