CWRU Wraps Up Play at Two Weekend Tournaments

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis completed another strong showing this past weekend at the Western & Southern Collegiate Invitational in Mason, Ohio and the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio.

Facing entirely Division I competition at the Western & Southern Invite, freshman Vivi Vemula won the fifth singles draw with match victories over Northern Kentucky's Nicholas Elleman 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, Xavier's Matthew Graft 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 in the semifinals, and Xavier's Michael Lee 6-4, 6-1 in the finals.  Sophomore Sam Concannon added a 3-1 record over the weekend in singles play, reaching the finals of the third flight with wins over players from Eastern Kentucky, Duquesne and Xavier.

In doubles play, the duo of junior Oludayo Areke and sophomore Zach Hennessey went 3-1 during the course of the weekend, reaching the semifinals of the third flight.  The Spartans finished play at the Western & Southern Invite with overall records of 17-7 in singles and 9-9 in doubles, despite the high level of competition.

At Oberlin, sophomore Henry Squire turned in a perfect 3-0 record during the weekend, while Will Grier added a 3-1 mark, and sophomore Rajeev Laungani and freshmen Josh Hsia, Aris Jhaveri and Austin Lawrence each recorded two singles wins apiece.  In doubles action at the event, both the Spartan duos of Jhaveri and freshman Earl Hsieh and Laungani and Lawrence went 2-1 during the weekend.

Altogether, CWRU was 15-7 in singles play and 5-4 in doubles at the Oberlin Invitational.
