Top-Ranked CWRU Advances to Third Round of NCAA Championship With 5-0 Win over Kalamazoo

The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship with a 5-0 win over Kalamazoo College in the second round at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland on Saturday afternoon.

CWRU improved to 13-5 all-time in NCAA Tournament matches with the win. The Spartans stand at 29-4 overall on the season following the victory, the team's 15th straight win, and improved to 24-0 against Division III opposition.               

Saturday's win sets up a third-round meeting with 14th-ranked Denison University on Sunday. The match is slated to be played at 12:00 p.m. at the Carlton Courts. Should weather force the match inside, it will be played at 2:30 p.m. at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club. Any changes to the location of the match will be posted on athletics.case.edu and on CWRU Athletics' social media tomorrow morning.

The Spartans were dominant in doubles play on Saturday afternoon, winning all three matches in quick fashion. Sophomore Ansh Shah and senior Michael Sutanto earned the first win of the match with an 8-0 victory at no. 3 doubles over Parker Foster and Louis Landreau, and seniors Diego Maza and Chris Provenzano followed shortly thereafter with an 8-0 win at no. 2 doubles against Casey Johnson and Adnan Alousi. Senior James Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru completed the sweep with an 8-1 win against Peter Fitzgerald and Gabe Vidinas.

CWRU went on to win two quick singles matches to secure the victory. Aduru claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win at no. 2 singles over Fitzgerald to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead and sophomore Casey Hishinuma clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win at no. 6 singles against Alek Hultberg.

When play was stopped due to decision, Hopper led Vidinas 6-1, 5-0 at no. 1 singles, Sutanto was ahead 6-1, 3-1 at no. 3 singles against Alousi, and sophomore Ajay Mahenthiran led Landreau 6-4, 5-1 at no. 5 singles. The fourth singles match between Shah and Johnson was tied 6-6, with Shah leading the tiebreaker 5-1.

Kalamazoo's season ended with a 12-8 overall record.
