First-year Ethan Samora won an all-Rochester battle over teammate David Riccio in capturing the C flight singles title, highlighting the University of Rochester men's tennis action on day two at the season-opening SLU Fall Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Sammis Tennis Courts.
Samora won 8-5 over Riccio to finish 4-0 in singles play over the weekend. He reached the finals after beating Union's Austin Gregory in the semifinals by an 8-2 score. Riccio won his semifinal match over Hyat Oyer of Hobart in a nailbiter, winning 8-7 (4).
Two UR players were in the semifinals in the B flight singles bracket, led by Kavin Shukla who ended up falling in the championship match. In the semifinals, he won over Hobart's Nick Fischer 8-1 while teammate Rahul Ravi was upended 8-4. During the final, Hobart's Achilleas Kousaridis, who dispatched Ravi, won again by an 8-4 score, knocking out Shukla.
Junior Krish Vennam competed on Sunday in the A flight singles bracket, but was defeated by Hamilton's Connor Griff in the semifinals. Griff, the eventual flight champion, topping Vennam by an 8-5 score.
Vennam also paired with teammate Josh Chu in the semifinals of the A flight doubles bracket, but unfortunately was beaten again by Griff and Anson Anderson 8-2, ending the pairs run for a title.
In the B flight doubles bracket, Surya Rajamani and Alex Kulvivat played in the semifinals as well, but fell by an 8-1 score to Luke Weber and Max Chang of RIT.
