NYU Finishes Second at Rider Invitational

The New York University men's track & field team competed at the Rider Invitational held on Saturday, April 11, in Lawrence Township, NJ.

The Violets took second among 23 teams with a total of 194 points. The host, Rider University, gained the victory with 200 points.

NYU took the first seven places among non-Division I runners,in the 5,000m. Senior Sebastian Oja was the winner at 15:28.88. Next to finish were junior Daniel Rieger (15:36.72), sophomores Jorge Maldonado (15:37.58) an Zach Karas (15:44.82), freshman Karn Setya (15:47.09), and sophomores Herbert Gates (15:55.01) and Nick Karam (16:02.37).

In the 800m, senior Zac Kish was the fastest among non-Division I athletes with a time of 1:56.57. Junior Max Avila placed third in 1:58.03. Other Violets to score in this event were sophomore Curtis Mann (sixth, 2:00.76) and senior Tom Donegan (seventh, 2:02.66).

Highlights:

- Sophomore Budd Brown picked up a victory in the 400m with a time of 50.76.

- Senior Johnny Lake also finished first in the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:41.39.

- Six Violets scored in the 1,500m. Freshman Max Mudd and sophomore Nolan Hayes made it into the top-three, finishing second (4:08.13) and third (4:11.92), respectively. Seniors Steve Crnic (4:13.67) and Justin Turlip (4:14.25) and rookies Neal Saddler (4:18.48) and Sam Praveen (4:21.14) finished fifth through eighth.

- Senior Tom Longabaugh tied for second in the pole vault with a solid height of 4.55m.

- Senior Brandon Deniz was a runner-up in the long jump at 6.41m, just 6cm shy of his personal best.

- Sophomore Carter Beardsley came in second in the shot put (13.52m) and also scored in the hammer throw, placing fourth with 39.47m. In the javelin throw, junior Boris Nimcevic was second with 45.10m.

- Junior Matthew Powers placed third in the 100m at 10.95. In the 200m, sophomore Caleb Su scored with an eighth-place finish (23.16).

- NYU had a strong showing in the relays, as well. The 4x800m team was the fastest among non-Division I schools, clocking 8:19.28. The 4x400m squad took second (3:26.75), while the 4x100m team was third (43.24).
