NYU Completes Day One of UAA Outdoor Championships

The New York University men's track & field team is in seventh place after day one of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outddor Championships on Saturday, April 28. The weekend event is being hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.

NYU totaled 13 points on Saturday. Washington University in St. Louis leads the competition with 81 points.

Senior Max Mudd provided 10 of NYU's points by winning the 10,000-meter race. His time of 31:44.22 bested the 17-person field. 

"That was a huge performance for him," said Head Coach Erison Hrtault. "He ran an awesome race to win."

Malcolm Montilus qualified for two final events that will take place on Sunday. The senior sprinter secured second in the 400m preliminaries by clocking a time of 49.09, nearly hitting his personal best of 49.05. During the winter season, Montilus took gold in the event at the UAA Indoor Championships. The native of Mendham, NJ, also will be competing in tomorrow's 200m dash following his eighth-place finish (23.00) on Saturday.

Freshman Zavy Miller finished 12th in the 200m by recording a time of 23.25. Earlier in the day, the St. Louis, MO, native qualified in the 100m dash finals, finishing in sixth place with a time of 11.39. Fellow classmate Jonathan Coaxum trailed behind in 16th, registering a time of 11.91.

Sophomore Julian Montilus was the sole Violet to qualify in the hurdle events. The younger Montilus brother took fifth in the 400m hurdle preliminaries by recording a time of 55.39. Senior Daniel Sovich placed ninth wth a time of 58.81, just missing the finals. Montilus also qualified in the 100m hurdles as the eighth-place finisher in the preliminaries (15.91).

From the distance squad, Vince Booth qualified for Sunday's 800m. The senior placed third in his preliminary run, posting a personal-best time of 1:54.71. Sophomore Benjamin Heintz and junior Soham Kamat followed in 10th and 11th places with nearly identical times of 1:57.28 and 1:57.29, respectively.

"He's always been one of those people who always just missed the UAA final," said Hurtault. "He ran a great race today."

OTHER UAA HIGHLIGHTS:

- NYU's 4x800m relay team (senior Karn Setya, Kamat, Heintz, Booth) finished sixth with a time of 7:59.50 to secure the Violets' three points on Saturday.

- Senior Jordan Reyes came in 12th in the 3,000 steeplechase by posting a time of 10:06.01.

- Junior Yohan Su and freshman Zachary Adams finished the long jump in 11th and 13th places with clearances of 6.01m and 5.96m, respectively.

The second day of the UAA Outdoor Championships will commence tomorrow at 10 am, starting with the high jump, where William Lee and Joseph Forrler will attempt to reach the podium for NYU.

"Day two is always going to present some surprises," said Hurtault. "The men's team is poised really well to get some wins and move up the board."
