Bears Run Away with Washington University Invitational on Senior Day

The Washington University in St. Louis men's track & field program totaled eight first place finishes to capture first place among the six teams to compete on the second day of the WashU Invitational.

The Bears men entered the weekend unranked in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top-25 as it tied for first place with No. 1-ranked North Central and ahead of No. 22-ranked Greenville. The Bears and Cardinals tied for first with 222.5 points while Greenville settled for third with 117 points.

The men claimed eight first place finishes and four marks that rank in DIII's top-10 on the year, including sophomore Nick Matteucci victory in the 1500m race by posting the Nation's top time of this season, 3:51.93. Senior Elvir Sarajlic placed second in the race, 3:55.87, with DIII's fifth best time this year.

Junior Eddie Wintergalen, sophomore Jon Fleming and freshmen Andrew Whitaker and John Harry Wagner claimed the top mark in the 4x400m relay with the nation's third best time of the year, 3:18.47.

Whitaker also finished first in the 110m hurdles by posting a sub-15 second time. He is one of only 18 student-athletes in DIII to do so this season. J.H. Wagner also claimed an individual event by placing first in the 400m (49.33).

Senior Roderick Smith posted the top time in the 100m dash (11.12) while also teaming up with Wintergalen and juniors Jason Singer and CJ Chin in the 4x100m relay for first place (42.31).

Senior Ezugo Onejeme was the top jumper in the men's competition. He posted first place finishes in the triple jump (13.83m) and the long jump (6.51m).

In addition, sophomore Marco Quaroni was second in the steeplechase with the sixth best time in DIII this season, 9:29.64.
