Three CWRU Men's Cross Country/Track & Field Student-Athletes Receive CSC Academic All-America Honors

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University senior Jack Begley, sophomore Nate Gilbert, and senior Logan Singer were each named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Team for their academic and athletic achievements during the 2022-23 academic year.

Begley claimed a spot on the first team, while Gilbert was selected to the second team, and Singer was named to the third team.

This was the second-straight season that Begley has been named an Academic All-American, while Gilbert and Singer each secured the honor for the first time in their respective careers.

As a department, CWRU concludes the 2022-23 academic year with 21 athletes having been named Academic All-Americans this season, more than any other year in department history and the most among all University Athletic Association schools. CWRU has registered 153 Academic All-America selections from 112 student-athletes all-time.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution, and be selected to an Academic All-District team.

Begley, the 2022 NCAA Men's Cross Country Elite 90 Award winner, earned his second career Academic All-District honor after selection to the Academic All-America Second Team last season. A nine-time UAA All-Academic honoree, he graduated from CWRU with a degree in engineering physics and a 4.0 cumulative grade point average. This season, Begley placed 53rd at the NCAA Cross Country Championship and 18th in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After winning the 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run at the 2023 UAA Outdoor Championships, he was named the conference's Most Outstanding Runner. For his career, Begley has seven All-Region honors (two cross country, five track and field) and eight All-UAA honors (two cross country, six track and field). He holds the school records in the outdoor 10,000-meter run and indoor 5,000-meter run.

Gilbert earned All-America honors for the first time in his career as a member of the distance medley relay at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships. He also earned All-Region and All-UAA honors in the event. During the cross country season, Gilbert competed in four races with a season-best time of 26:09.8. He is a three-time UAA All-Academic honoree with a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a biology and environmental studies major.

Singer graduated from CWRU with a degree in mechanical engineering and a 3.707 cumulative GPA. An 11-time UAA All-Academic honoree, he won the 1,500-meter run at the 2023 outdoor conference championships. Singer totaled five All-UAA track and field honors and 10 overall All-Region honors (eight track and field, two cross country) during his career. He was a member of the All-American distance medley relay that placed seventh in 2023, and, in 2022, he placed 17th in the mile run at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Singer holds school records in the indoor 1,000-meter run, mile run, and distance medley relay and outdoor 1,500-meter run and 4x800-meter relay.

The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes tennis honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA. The Division III CSC Academic All-America programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Divisions III Academic All-America programs.

The Spartans finished the 2022 cross country season with a 28th place finish at the national meet. During the indoor track and field season, CWRU placed 59th with the All-America finish by the distance medley relay. In the outdoor season, Begley was the lone Spartan to qualify for the national championship, and he did not score.
