From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field won the
Lid-Lifter Invitational held at Denison University on Saturday,
January 24 in a field comprised of 12 teams. The Tartans
ended the day with 111.5 team points with Muskingum, the
second-place team, tallying 88 points.
For the second straight race, senior Thomas
Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) took first in the
800-meter run. He topped his time from a week ago by .85
seconds when he crossed in 1:54.09 Saturday afternoon. The 800 race
proved to be the Tartans best event of the day, as the Cardinal and
Gray collected points after claiming third through sixth as
well. Junior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles
West) and sophomore Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls,
Ohio/Kenston) finished third and fourth with times of 1:58.34 and
2:00.74 followed by junior Thomas Mayo-Smith (Rye,
N.Y.) (2:00.91) and freshman Evan Larrick (Westerville,
Ohio/Westerville North) (2:01.77).
Carnegie Mellon also turned in a great showing in the 3,000-meter
run earning points after placing third, fifth, sixth, seventh and
eighth. Pacing the Tartans was junior Brian
Bollens(Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) with a personal-best time
of 9:04.90. Senior Josh Antonson(Naperville, Ill./Neuqua
Valley) (9:09.05) placed fifth, sophomore William
Casazza (Barrington, R.I.) (9:13.72 sixth, senior Elliot
Watson (Lebanon, Ohio/Miami Valley School) (9:18.03) seventh
and sophomore Gordon Pace (Orlando, Fla./Trinity Prep)
(9:20.06) eighth.
Junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) finished
second in the mile with a time of 4:28.14 while senior Eamon
Cullinane (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) crossed in sixth with a
time of 4:37.98.
Sophomore Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft
Academy) and junior Zach Dell (Hampstead, Md./North
Carroll) earned points for the Tarans in the 60-meter
hurdles. Boyer finished second with a time of 9.12 and Dell
crossed in 9.58 to place seventh. Boyer also claimed seventh
place in the long jump with a leap of 6.01 meters.
In the 60-meter dash, sophomore Andrew Chang (Fairfax,
Va./W.T. Woodson) crossed with a time of 7.27 to place sixth.
The last event saw the Tartans claim the top spot in the distance
medley relay, as the team comprised of Cullinane, senior Ben
Walker (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and
freshmen Ani Ramakrishnan (Davis, Calif.) and Joseph
Pickens (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg Coventry) crossed with a time of
10:56.25.
In the field events, freshman Kevin Wainczak (South
Brunswick, N.J.) placed fourth in the pole vault after clearing
3.81 meters. Sophomore Kyle Weaver (Tallahassee,
Fla./Maclay School) cleared the bar at 3.51 meters and
junior Victor Yan (Irvington, N.Y.) cleared 3.36 meters
to place sixth and eighth, respectively. Freshmen Shane
Conton(Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) and Jacob
Schofel (Livingston, N.J.) each turned in six-place
finishes. Conton recorded a leap of 12.26 meters in the
triple jump while Schofel record a toss of 11.97 meters in the
weight throw.
