Highlighted by a school-record performance in the 4x400-meter relay, the Case Western Reserve University men's track & field team defeated rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in Saturday afternoon's Battle for the Obelisk at the Veale Center.
The Spartans outscored the Tartans, 70-66, overtaking the visitors with a first-place finish in the final event of the day (the 4x400m relay). Combined with the women's 81-55 victory, CWRU outscored CMU by a score of 151-121 to win the Obelisk Trophy for the first time since 2012.
The record-setting quartet of juniors Devon Belew (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) and Jonathan Freeman (Houston, Texas/Awty International School) along with sophomores Nico Ericksen-Deris (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and Nathaniel Wahner (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) finished in a time of 3:27.12, breaking the old mark of 3:27.75, which was accomplished last season. Belew and Freeman both ran during that effort as well.
Individually, three Spartans were double-winners in field events, claiming 10 points apiece for their team; sophomore Graeham Heil (Fort Thomas, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) and seniors Sam Reusser (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville) and Mark Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Venango Catholic).
Heil hit a career-best mark of 1.95m (6'4.75") in the high jump and won the triple jump at 13.31m (43'8"). Kulinski cleared the bar in the pole vault 4.40m (14'5.24") and turned in a long jump of 6.28m (20'7.25"). Reusser threw 13.72m (45'0.25") in the shot put and a career-best 13.77m (45'2.25") in the weight throw.
