NYU Takes Fourth at UAA Championships

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's track & field team finished in fourth place at the 2018 University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships, which were held Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25, at Case Western University in Cleveland, OH.

The Violets totaled 61 points to trail the University of Chicago by eight points for third. Washington University in St. Louis was crowned UAA Indoor Champions, leading the pack with 120 points.

Following the day where his younger brother helped bring NYU a gold medal, Malcolm Montilus collected some of his own hardware. The senior from Mendham, NJ, captured the 400m title with a time of 48.98 in a close contest against Brandeis University's Irie Gourde (49.03), the number one runner in the event in the country.

Montilus was not done, however. He later added a bronze medal with his third-place finish in the 200m, registering a time of 22.83.

"Unbelievable. The Malcolm brothers brought us a lot of gold this weekend," said Head Coach Erison Hurtault. "Amazing run in the 400 for Malcolm today. He ran his race and it showed."

Also wanting a spot on the podium, Zavy Miller took the bronze in the 60m dash. The freshman got on the scoreboard by recording a time of 7.02 to set his second personal-best time in two days.

"Zavy has a great attitude and a lot of talent," said Hurtault. "He is going to be a major factor for us going forward. He did well under the pressure. I think he will keep going in the right direction"

Distance runner Neil Saddler also secured a gold medal, placing first in the 3,000m. The San Diego, CA, native led the pack throughout the entire race on his way to posting a time of 8:31.70. Junior Ben Haderletrailed behind in 14th with a time of 8:55.96.

"Saddler is like a step ahead of those guys," said Hurtault. "It looked like he was dictating the race. That's what happens when you are the top dog out there. He's making that turn from one of the good guys in the UAA to one of the better guys in the country."

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- The men's 4x400m relay team (freshman Shawn Andrade, senior Vince Booth, junior Soham Kamat, Malcolm Montilus) finished in fifth place with a time of 3:27.75.

- Senior Sherman King took fifth in the pole vault by clearing a height of 4.21m.

"It's important that these guys rose to the occasion," said Hurtault. "I am very proud of how the team competed. Everyone who was supposed to really compete put it out there. They gave it their best shot. We still have a ways to go. We were only a few points out of third. Our team came together and put it all out there."
