The New York University men's cross country team opened its 2016 season with a third-place finish at the Ron Stonitsch Invitational hosted by Vassar College on Saturday, September 10, in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The Violets totaled 61 points, only four behind second-place Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (57). Williams College, ranked third by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), captured first place over the 6k course with the low score of 31.

NYU senior Jorge Maldonado led the entire 238-man pack, posting a personal-best time of 19:08.01.

"It is definitely a good sign when you get a win in such a competitive race," said Head Coach Erison Hurtault. "Jorge is definitely the top guy on our team and continues to prove that since last season."

Junior Max Mudd posted a 10th-place finish, clocking a time of 19:39.3.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Senior Zach Karas finished two spots behind Mudd with a time of 19:41.9

- Coming in 18th was junior Neil Saddler with a time of 19:52.8. Following behind in 20th was sophomore Matt Osubor (19:55.9).

- Junior Jordan Reyes crossed the finish line with a time of 20:10.5 to take 34th.

"We had a very strong top five," Hurtault stated. "We held some people out. I'm anticipating some better races from everybody in two weeks when we get Karn (Setya) back, which will make us tough to beat. We are looking to put a good effort in next time."
