Bears Finish Fourth in Top-25 Showdown at Augustana Invitational

The nationally ranked Washington University in St. Louis cross country team placed fourth at the 40th Annual Brissman-Lundeen Invite in Rock Island, Ill. on Saturday after another solid performance, which included a plethora of new career-best individual marks.

The men's 8k race saw several great programs competing in a stacked field with three of the top-four nationally ranked teams in the country, No. 12 ranked WashU finished in fourth place out of 27 teams with a team score of 130. 

In the most competitive race of the regular season, the top-five finishers for WashU performed well and all finished within 17 seconds of each other. 
 
Senior Jeff Candell ran hard to an 19th-place finish (24:17.2) and registered a new personal record in the process to lead WU. 
 
Next in line for WashU was Matthew Hornung, who also set a new PR as he shaved off nearly 45 seconds from his previous race at Wartburg, checking in at 24:27.0 in 26th place overall. 
 
Matt Kusak set a new career-best time as he crossed the finish line at 24:28.6, finishing just seconds behind Hornung for 29th place. 
 
Ben Gasper and Thomas Penney also achieved new personal records, as Gasper checked in at 24:31.2 in 32nd place, while Penney (24:34.1) was 35th overall. 
 
Rounding out the top-seven was Joseph Silagi (25:02.1) in 64th and Alexander Evans (25:07.6) in 70th. Just like the top-five finishers, both Silagi and Evans recorded career-top times.
