Tayler Fravel completed her sweep of All-Tournament Team honors
in the NCAA Division III Softball Championships on Tuesday
afternoon. Fravel was named to the 2014 finals All-Tournament Team
for the national championships conducted in Tyler, Texas.
It is her third such honor since NCAA play began in mid-May. Fravel
was named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team for May 9-11,
the Super Regionals All-Tournament Team on May 15-17, and now, the
National Championships All-Tournament Team.
In the Regionals, Rochester defeated Marywood College, 6-0, then
lost to Alfred University, 8-7. The Yellowjackets won three
straight elimination games – defeating Messiah College, 4-3,
then sweeping Alfred in the finals (4-1 and 6-0) to win the
regional and advance to the Super Regionals. Fravel was 7 for 17
(.412) in the five games. She scored seven runs. In the two-game
sweep of Alfred, she was 2-3 with three runs scored in the first
game (4-1 Rochester) with a double and triple. In the second game,
a 6-0 victory, she was 2-2 with two runs scored. In the field, she
had 12 putouts, 15 assists, and one error for a .964 fielding
percentage.
Rochester hosted a best-of-three Super Regional against
15th-ranked Rowan University on May 15 and 17. In a 5-0
victory on May 15, Fravel was 0-4 with one run scored. In the
field, she had two putouts and three assists. Two days later, she
had the hit that started the winning rally. Rochester defeated
Rowan, 3-0, in nine innings to advance to the national
championships.
With the Yellowjackets hitting as the visiting team at their own
field, Fravel led off the top of the ninth with a single to center.
That was followed by a bunt single from senior Meghan Hennessy
putting two runners aboard. Senior Nina Korn hit a three-run home
run. In the field, Fravel had three assists, the most crucial of
which came in the bottom of the eighth. It prevented the Profs from
scoring the winning run and forcing a third game.
Rowan put runners on second and third with one down in the eighth.
Rowan's Jennifer Arcella grounded to Fravel at second and she threw
home where catcher Alyssa Murillo tagged out the runner trying to
score. Rochester worked out of the inning and staged the
winning rally in the ninth.
In the two games in Texas, Fravel was 4-8 with four RBIs and one
run scored. She was 3-5 with a run scored and three RBIs in an 8-7
loss to 20th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater. She was
indirectly responsible for a fourth run. Rochester scored two in
the top of the second. With runners on first and third, Fravel took
off for second base and allowed herself to get caught in a rundown.
During the rundown, Rochester scored for a 3-0 lead. The next day
in the double-elimination format, Fravel was 1-3 with an RBI in a
9-1 loss to 13th-ranked St. Thomas (MN).
Fravel was named a Third Team All-American by the National
Fastpitch Coaches Association. For the year, she hit .453 (72-159)
with 47 runs scored, 12 doubles, five triples, one home run, and 26
RBIs. She set a single-season record with the 72 base hits. For the
nine games in the NCAA playoffs, she hit .364 (12-33) with 10 runs
scored, one double, one triple, and four RBIs.
