CWRU Finishes Fourth at UAA Championship with 11-3 Win Over NYU on Final Day

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

The Case Western Reserve University softball team finished 5-5 for fourth place at the 2015 University Athletic Association Championship with an 11-3 win over New York University on the final day of the six-day tournament.

Washington University in St. Louis and Emory University tied for first place with a championship record of 8-2.

Against NYU, the Spartans opened the game scoring five runs. Senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) tripled in a run and scored on a double to left field by senior designated hittter Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity). Roberts scored on a double from sophomore pitcher Annie Wennerberg(Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), who stole third and scored on a single from senior first baseman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe). Though Taylor got caught stealing third, it allowed the Spartans to score their fifth run of the inning.

The Violets responded with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Spartans matched it with another hit and RBI from Wennerberg in the top of the second. Putting another run on the board during the third inning, the Violets made it a 6-2 ballgame.

The Spartans responded by making it a 9-2 game after the fourth with runs from Parello, Wennerberg, and freshman centerfielder Katie Wede (Carmel, Ind./Carmel).

The Violets were able to add one more run in the fifth inning, but the Spartans would score one in the sixth off a Wennerberg home run and one in the seventh as freshman Lindsey Robinson (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) scored on a wild pitch to secure a win. The Spartans stole eight bases.
