Maroons Capture Wins Over Carleton and RIT

From University of Chicago Athletics

Tense moments in the seventh innings went in favor of the University of Chicago softball team as the Maroons pulled out a pair of wins over Carleton College and Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday.

The Maroons leveled their season record at 3-3.

Game One – UChicago 5, Carleton 2

In the second at-bat of the game, sophomore third baseman Maggie O'Hara set the table with a triple. She immediately scored on a RBI groundout by freshman designated player Alyssa Stolmack. UChicago went on to tally one run in each of the opening three innings. Junior shortstop Kristin Lopez led off the second inning with a double and came home on senior second baseman Tabbetha Bohac's sacrifice fly. The margin increased to 3-0 in the third when sophomore outfielder Anna Woolery scored on an error.

Carleton made things interesting in the bottom of the third by loading the bases with two outs. An error plated one run, but a lineout ended the threat. Junior pitcher Jordan Poole later smacked a two-run double in the top of the sixth to help her own cause at 5-1.

Down to their final at-bats, the Knights stayed persistent by scoring on a single in the bottom of the seventh. Carleton filled the bases once again, this time with one out. Poole came up clutch with a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the game at 5-2.

Poole improved her record to 2-1 on the season in her complete-game effort. She struck out seven batters while allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned) and four walks.

UChicago collected six hits offensively and committed one error. Lopez went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases in the game.

Game Two – UChicago 4, RIT 3

RIT posted a pair of runs in its first swing through the lineup, scoring on a single and then a double steal of home plate in the first inning. The Maroons evened it up thanks to several Tiger miscues in the bottom of the third. Consecutive errors brought Woolery all the way home, and Lopez's sacrifice fly plated junior outfielder Devan Parkison.

In the top of the fifth, RIT recaptured the advantage 3-2. The Tigers smacked back-to-back doubles with two outs. The status quo lasted until the bottom of the seventh when the Maroons staged their rally.

Stolmack came on to pinch hit and delivered a double. A fielder's choice and an error on the same play put runners on second and third with one out. Parkison then stepped into the batter's box and pulled a single through the right side of the infield. The first runner scored easily, while Woolery slid under the catcher's tag on a play at the plate to win the game.

UChicago posted five hits which came from five different players. Parkison batted 1-for-2 with two RBI, one walk and one stolen base. RIT made four errors in the game.

The winning pitcher was Molly Moran (1-1). The freshman rung up eight strikeouts in her seven innings to go with four hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks.
